What Is a Neck Support?

There are many common questions relating to the use of a neck support and the benefits of wearing one following injury. This article discusses those key questions posed as well as providing information on when a neck support should be worn.
It is designed to offer additional protection and confidence to someone following injury, with a comfortable and secure collar which fits round the neck following both minor and major cervical injuries. The type of injury sustained will dictate the type of collar offered, with more serious injuries requiring a more rigid collar to help minimise movement.
How does a neck support work?
They work both physically and mentally. Physically, a foam neck support offers a small degree of protection to the neck following minor injuries such as whiplash which can make the patient more comfortable when moving round or even lying down. Mentally, it gives the patient the confidence to move around freely as well as highlighting to other people the injury incurred so that they may be more considerate. Following any injury, being in a busy place can be stressful with the fear of being knocked or pushed which could exacerbate a pre-existing injury.
For more serious injuries a rigid support may be offered which will restrict movement of the neck post injury. Any additional movement following injury could cause more damage, therefore it is important to immobilise the area until either a doctor has signed you off, or until you are fully fit.
When do I need to wear a neck support?
The type of injury sustained will dictate the type of product required during rehabilitation. For minor injuries including whiplash or spinal injuries a foam neck support will suffice, which is designed to be comfortable.
In the event of more serious injuries and typically used following car accidents to restrict movement, a rigid support may be offered. These forms of supports are often used as a precautionary measure as in the immediate aftermath of an accident it is unclear what injuries a person may have incurred. At this critical time it is best to air on the side of caution and restrict movement until they have been checked over by a doctor.
What are the benefits of wearing a neck support?
Following an accident or during recovery, the use of a neck support maintains support of the neck to prevent further injury whilst allowing you to continue your daily tasks. Whilst wearing one may be impractical it still allows you to walk, shop or work and gives you the best chance of a full recovery.
A brief summary
Whilst we never want to be in a position where a neck support is required, we can always be safe in the knowledge that when a rigid support is being offered it is there to help and protect, as damage to the neck and spinal cord can have serious repercussions. The top of the spinal cord houses the nerves which control movement of the body below the neck, therefore damage to this area is unthinkable.
