It's As Simple As That! Chiropractic Beginnings

Like most people, I am sure you know something about chiropractic, but did you know that much of Chiropractic's history has helped people with natural health restoration, it is the leading natural health profession in the world and current evidence is finding chiropractic directly improves headaches, allergies, asthma, Fibromyalgia, immune system problems, high blood pressure, hearing problems, and much more?
Chiropractic started as a hunch over 100 years ago, when Harvey Lillard heard a "pop" in his neck after which there was a rapid deterioration in his hearing.
His employer, Daniel David Palmer, a magnetic healer, recognized the relationship of that "pop" to a spinal displacement.
He then theorized that the spinal displacement reduced function of the nervous system which affected Harvey Lillard's hearing. The nervous system is comprised of the brain, spinal cord, and all the spinal nerves that branch out to the rest of the body. Its function is to coordinate all the systems of the body together.
Daniel David Palmer was a self-educated (as were many people before the turn of the century) magnetic healer, with a large practice in Davenport, Iowa. In this booming, raucous river boat town on the Mississippi, Palmer started magnetic healing in a conventional manner.
But now, through Lillard, Palmer was on a new track - with a new way to look at the problem of healing and health.
Palmer began his study of the spine and nervous system. Eventually, using the bony processes used for muscular attachments and movement, he soon developed a system to lever the spinal bones back into position and free the full nerve flow to the body.
After that first "adjustment', Harvey Lillard noticed almost immediate improvements in his hearing, Palmer discovered how to jump start healing in the body, and Modern Chiropractic was born.
Palmer at the time thought he had discovered a new healing method. However, history has recorded that some of the earliest healers understood the relationship between health and the condition of the spine and nervous system.
Most cultures practicing medicine have some ancient writings dealing with the spine and its effect on the body.
Many cultures spoke of massaging the back or even back walking, a practice of laying a patient or family member on their belly and slowly walking bare foot up and down their back. American Indians used to have small children walk on the backs of the sick.
There are even records of the South American Incas using manipulations as a form of healing.
As far back as 1500 B.C., the Greeks were recording their successes in lower back adjustments.
Hippocrates was quoted in his many writings, which can be found in a book called Manipulation and Importance of Good Health and another called Setting Joints by Leverage. These works were written some time in the 500 B.C.'s.
"Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."- Hippocrates
Another famous Greek Physician, Claudius Galen, wrote early in the second century,"Look to the nervous system as the key to maximum health." Galen was made famous for treating a scholar named Eudemus. Galen adjusted Eudemus' neck, which apparently helped heal a paralysis of the scholar's hand and arm.
What makes Chiropractic different from the gross manipulation used throughout history is the understanding of its distinct health promoting philosophy and specific healing art.
D.D. Palmer was an innovator, but had an abrasive personality ill suited to the promotion of chiropractic and its new health philosophy.
His son B.J. Palmer was the educator, researcher, inventor, and marketer that lead the fledgling profession to become a world known profession.
Chiropractic and its leaders continued to build on those ground breaking health and wellness lifestyle models and philosophy which are now accepted in the mainstream and used worldwide.
The principles of this distinct healing philosophy are still the same as they were 100 years ago.
Fundamentally, the body is a self healing organism and everyday your body is either getting a little stronger or a little weaker. The structure of the body determines how it will function. The nervous system controls and coordinates every organ and tissue of the body. There is a relationship between the spine and the health of the nervous system. Find the blockage, eliminate it, and the body will be more free to move back toward health.
Chiropractic continues to lead the way in natural health restoration and to help people achieve optimal wellness. It has done this for millions of people by simply cultivating health.
How important will it be for you to have your spine and nervous system checked for health?
